What will you dress up as?

Halloween's practically around the corner and costume parties are in full-swing. How many are you planning to attend? Last year it was five for me and thankfully, they were spread out in October weekends. This time is two... whew.

I would like to go as Kahlan in "Legend of the Seeker" but my finding a wig hasn't turned up any good leads. I found this pic of  a comic con-goer dressed as Kahlan (in traveling garb) from the recently concluded Phoenix Com-con 2011. I just luv this one.

This one seems to be an easy ensemble to create as Robyn, the Witch Hunter. This is one interesting Anime series that I have yet to watch in complete form. ☺

I could zip along the Columbia River until I hit Idaho, then maybe join the cowboys in Montana or head south to the deserts where my heart would soar like the mesa-grazing eagles. But as I had done every weekday before this one, I shook the fantasy out of my head and roared down the road towards the city and responsibility.

Adria's concentration dissipated again as she watched the molecular model of a compound that was the object of their report swirled in 3D animation done by one of her group mates. The five members were seated cross-legged on the floor around the low oval coffee table. Ted was in middle of showing them what they could do for their presentation as he assigned topics for each member to tackle.

Q: What superhero is your Alter-ego?

My superhero alter-ego would have to be Supergirl. I think it's cool to have the power of flight, (beats the traffic) so you do cool loops,  twirls, spins in the air (okay, I might  have made  someone airsick)  and  close to being  indestructible too helps if some guy tries a fast one or worse, corners you in an alley, thinking you're helpless.

From Goodreads
When a teenage brother and sister inherit secret metaphysical powers, they are unknowingly hunted by a group of clandestine immortals. While one of the siblings will reluctantly choose the path of righteousness, the other will defiantly dabble with the promise of true power and the darkness that accompanies it.

As David James begins his freshman year of high school, he learns that his older sister Danielle's popularity isn't genetic. However, their lives change dramatically with the discovery that they possess power which grants them vast unearthly abilities. The more they strive for reasonable normality, the more unstable their powers become when combined with the stresses of high school teenage life.

While jealousy, love, and anger unhinge their once typical lives, temptations to abuse their newfound gifts are manipulated by a shrouded and unyielding adversary who seeks to cast earth into a modern dark age. Soon secrets will injure the ones they love as the burden of true power begins to isolate them. Not even the ominous prospect of a crumbling world matters when each of them finds that they are helpless to control their own desires.

Shrouded Secrets is an imaginative story in which David and Danielle James encounter the realm Eruditus. It is there they are taught to employ powers of the Artifex. The Galinea, knighted protectors of Eruditus, have those among them who have gone rogue. These malcontents, known as the Shroud, have set their sights on the two siblings. A perilous adventure ensues as David and Danielle become entangled with enemies who seek to claim their very lives

Summary from Goodreads:

Orphaned as a child after the bizarre deaths of her parents, Mira has been tormented by visions of ‘ghosts’ ever since puberty. As a carrier of the Fragile-X gene, her eyes have crystallised more than usual, causing her physical and emotional pain. Diagnosed as blind-sighted and institutionalised in the Serenity Centre -- a sanctuary for handicapped adults -- she can see convicts of the past, yet she cannot see any of her real surroundings or even her own body. After a number of failed escape attempts, Mira has regressed under increasing medication to a near-child-like state; paranoid, terrified and unco-operative. Then two medical specialists arrive at Serenity to do a health survey -- while secretly testing new technology that interrogates the human subconscious. The project leader is also selling military secrets, and when he murders one of the bodyguards to cover his crime, Mira is the only witness …

Carry On Tuesday: "The Show Must Go On"

Prompt Tuesday
For today's prompt visit here.

Pacen Eldo laid his hand on the more agitated gardener and was relieved the wiry man had taken his tone down several notches before stopped speaking altogether. Pacen then glanced at the other portly man who looked like he was marshaling his emotions for a rebuttal. He was rewarded when the other man had started to calm down.

"Gentlemen, please, there is always a solution to this. Let's all take a 30-minute breather and then come and see me at the Nook." Pacen pointed at the table where he would be waiting for them. "Okay?" The men nodded in agreement and departed for the opposite corners of the garden center.

"Now that wrinkle was somewhat remedied, the show must go on." He strode to the small stage and addressed fellow green thumb enthusiasts.

Sunday Scribblings: "You Are Here"

Sunday Scribblings

A picture prompt for today:

Adria and Sally browsed from one display case after another in the vast museum. The gems set in various jewelry designs made them linger to admire the dazzling creations. They were so engrossed with admiring the intricate designs that neither girl was aware someone was observing them from his secret corner before ducking away.

Sally abruptly stopped. Panic seized her when no one from their class was in the same room with them. Heck, the other museum visitors have already drifted away leaving them alone in the room.

"C'mon, I don't want to have a "Night in the Smithsonian" experience if I can help it."

Adria shot her friend an amused look. "It wouldn't be too bad." She strode briskly towards the interactive locator map found at the entrance of the room. A green dot flashed, "You are here...."

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted here, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Winterling by Sarah Prineas

I followed this link from one of my fave authors in Stargate: Atlantis book series,Entanglement by Martha Wells tweets. After reading the summary, I'm  psyched! I hope the paperback won't be too far behind. :D

Summary from Goodreads:
With her boundless curiosity and wild spirit, Fer has always felt that she doesn’t belong. Not when the forest is calling to her, when the rush of wind through branches feels more real than school or the quiet farms near her house. Then she saves an injured creature—he looks like a boy, but he’s really something else. He knows who Fer truly is, and invites her through the Way, a passage to a strange, dangerous land.

Fer feels an instant attachment to this realm, where magic is real and oaths forge bonds stronger than iron. But a powerful huntress named the Mor rules here, and Fer can sense that the land is perilously out of balance. Fer must unlock the secrets about the parents she never knew and claim her true place before the worlds on both sides of the Way descend into endless winter.

Sarah Prineas captivates in this fantasy-adventure about a girl who must find within herself the power to set right a terrible evil.

Animax Asia brings a couple of new shows

With an interest in writing for animation, I would always check out some new shows coming from the Anime world. This month (October) Book of Bantorra and Last Exile Fam will air.  Last Exile Fam is scheduled this October 15 while The Book of Bantorra will air on October 23.

I'm learning towards Book of Bantorra though.

Program Summary:
In a world where dead people turn into books stored in the Bantorra Library, anyone who reads a book can learn their past. The Bantorra Library is maintained by the Armed Librarians, who wield supernatural abilities. Their leader is the powerful woman Hamyuts Meseta whom their enemy – the psychotic religious cult known as Shindeki Church, is trying to assassinate in order to gain the secrets of the Bantorra Library.

The Book of Bantorra
It sounds like this show is filled with suspense with thrilling scenes.

Carry on Tuesday: "It was love at first sight"

Carry On Tuesday Prompt

Slumber Party by Top Party Ideas

Adria stared at the bottle spinning on the bedroom floor and wished she didn't join tonight's slumber party. She couldn't help but give a sideways glance at her best friend, Sally, who was seated beside her while Pepper,  her flaming auburn hair neatly tucked under a towel, was seated across them. She wore an  expectant expression as the bottle slowed its rotation.

This can't be good. She thought and tried to be calm. Why do I ever get to be in this mess? Adria was continuing her mental monologue that she missed Pepper's question entirely when the bottle had finally stopped.

A nudge from Sally shook Adria out of her reverie. The blonde girl pointed.

Adria suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. Of course. "What was the question?"

Pepper cleared her throat. "It was love at first sight for you and Rick Lineheart?"  Her voice was tentative that to Adria, she thought the other girl was afraid she would be responsible for breaking this new found friendship.

Monday Fix: Who You Really Are By Heinz Winckler

Monday Fix is a weekly meme that I started here several Mondays ago. This meme is anything really that gets you to start your day. It's either your fave coffee or tea blend, listening to your music of the day from your  list of fave music artists, your garden bloom, your fave TV show etc.

Today's pick is a song video of "Who You Really Are" by Heinz Winckler for the Swiss Eurovision Song Contest. I wish we can watch the show. If our cable provider didn't take out Sky News, it would have been  possible since I managed to watch Eurovision '96 (was it) when Boyzone entered a song entry for their Irish delegate. This was the only channel carrier with all things further Europe  (aside from BBC) or even M-Net Channel, which carried South African news and goings in that area. This was the channel station where I first heard of Heinz Winckler singing to Chasing Shadows. I've always enjoyed watching these programs since you can see see a lot of talent.

For some reason the video won't show up here so here's the link to the page

Friday Fiction: Luck

The One-Minute Writer
Today's prompt is to write about "Luck".

Friday Fiction is your opportunity to write a short (short, short, short) story. Many participants use more than one minute for Friday Fiction prompts, and I don't generally take the length of the post into account when I name a Friday winner.

Moonlight 9
Adria and Pepper burst into the semi-darkened and empty gymnasium. Adria shut the doors behind her while Pepper dashed towards the other door on the opposite end of the room and secured it. For safety measure, she also locked the doors leading to the locker rooms. When she returned, she was still gasping for breath and her face shone a barely restrained panic that she fought to squelch.

"Please tell me you have a plan?" Pepper took another deep breath and glanced around the huge room.  It was empty but there weren't a lot of hiding places they can use to their advantage. She noticed a baleful moonlight streamed through one of the upper windows of the building. "Because this place is ripe for Horror 101."

Adria nodded in silent agreement and followed her friend's gaze up towards the window. She just saw a shadow figure ducking away.

"With any luck, Rick and other guys will deal with them before they get inside." Adria crossed her fingers.

Waiting on Wednesday (2)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted here, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

I saw this book being currently read by oneuponaseries and after reading the summary I was hooked.

Summary from Goodreads:
Release date: October 11, 2011

The case of a boy missing for 40 years explodes into the present in Todd Ritter’s second novel, featuring Perry Hollow Police Chief Kat Campbell.

On the same night that Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, nine-year-old Charlie Olmstead jumped on his bike to see if he could get a better look. It was the last anyone ever saw of him. After Perry Hollow Police Chief Jim Campbell found Charlie’s bike caught up above a waterfall, he assumed the worse, and so did everyone else except Charlie's mother.

Years later, Eric Olmstead—and famous author and Charlie’s brother—has come back to bury his mother and fulfill her last request: Find his brother. To do so he goes to the current police chief and his former sweetheart Kat Campell, and it isn’t long before they discover that finding Charlie was his mother's secret obsession, and while she never found him she uncovered clues suggesting that he wasn’t the only victim.
